What is a blog?

what is a blog

A blog is short for weblog, and its a type of website that is regularly updated and looks like an online journal. Every time you write a post, it will be shown on top, and older post gets pushed down, so its very similar to how Facebook and Twitter display content. Typically, a blog is run by an individual or a small group, with an informal or conversational writing style.

Blog vs Website

All blogs are websites, but not all websites are blogs. Confused? Let me explain! Any place you visit on the internet that has a URL (Domain Name) is a website. An online store is a website, a search engine is a website, and are websites, and a blog is also a website. Its just a different type of website (as explained earlier) that displays updated content in chronological order.

Why Start a Blog?

Lots of people start blogs everyday and for a variety of reasons. Some want to attract an audience because they have something to say, or have an experience they want to share. Blogs create great opportunities to generate traffic. When your blog has traffic, you can monetize it and make serious money. In fact, if you look up Blog Success Stories, you will see lots of bloggers quitting the jobs and making a full time income with their blog(s).

Why isnt Everyone Starting a Blog?

Most people that want to start a blog, never get it done, and its because of two main reasons (or excuses).

1. They are intimated by technology and think you have to be some kind of computer expert to create a blog. The truth is, starting a blog is extremely easy and if you look through this tutorial, you will see just how easy it really is.

2. They think it cost a fortune to run a blog. Actually running a blog is extremely cheap. It only cost about a Starbucks coffee a month for hosting. Everything else, including the software to run your blog is FREE.

How Do I Get Started?

1. Decide on a niche/topic for you blog.
My #1 advice is to blog about a topic you are passionate about, because you will have a greater chance of success. So what do you want to write about? Do you want to blog about travel, fashion, coupons, or maybe celebrity gossip? You can basically blog about anything you want and usually there is a fan base for everything. You can have as many blogs as you want, but for your first blog, I suggest you choose a niche you already know and love.

2. Register for a Domain and Hosting.
A domain name is what people type in their browser to get to your blog (example: If you dont know what a domain name is, think of it like a phone number for your website, except its alphanumeric instead of just numbers. When people want to call me, they dial my phone number. When people want to reach my blog, they type my domain name. A domain comes free with web hosting.

A web hosting account provides storage and connects your blog to the internet. Back to the phone number analogy, just because I have a phone number, doesnt mean my friends can call me. Thats because I have to purchase service from a company like AT&T or Verizon in order to connect my phone number to my phone.

Its the same with a blog, in order for you to run your blog, you need web hosting. A hosting company connects your blog to the internet, host all your files and photos, and displays your blog when someone types your domain into their browser.
